The Fifth International Commemoration day in memory of the victims of the Holocaust took place in Yangon University on 17/2/2014.
  •

Following the United Nation Resolution–60/7 (1 November 2005) the Ministry of Education of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in collaboration with  the United Nations, Embassies of Israel and Germany, with support from the Embassies of United States of America, France and the British Council Myanmar, organized the commemoration ceremony.

In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly designated January 27 as the annual international day of commemoration to honor the victims of Holocaust. This date was chosen since it marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp in occupied Poland.

On his speech, the Israeli Ambassador to Myanmar, H.E Hagay Moshe Behar, emphasized that…” the state of Israel, as the only Jewish state in the world is committed to preserving the memory and passing on the heritage left to us, by the holocaust survivors. We-the generation that came after, must never forget, since the history of the Holocaust is not just a lesson from the past…it is also a lesson for the future. The International Community must join forces, work together and do all that is necessary to educate the future generation, and prevent it from never recurring…”.

In the event, representatives from the Yangon Regional Government, Ambassadors and UN representatives, as well as professors and students from the Yangon University participated. The main lecture was given by Dr. Joel Zisenwine from the Tel-Aviv University on behalf of “Yad Vashem” the International Institute for Holocaust Reserch, Jerusalem-Israel.

Following the main event in the university, two more lectures on the subject were given in the Myanmar Peace Center and in the British Council.
