8 Israeli companies took part mid-May in the NAMPO agricultural show. The show that attracts more than 70,000 visitors takes place in the Free State and this is the second year that Israel had a national pavilion at the show. The Israeli companies showcased just a fraction of israel’s outstanding agricultural expertise. The companies participating ranged from drip irrigation to special fertilizers, intensive farming methods including greenhouses, special strawberry production plants, high quality seedlings, aqua phonics, fish farming and mixers for fertilizers and feeding. It is noteworthy to mention that all Israeli companies that were present have local presence employing hundreds of South Africans, some in manufacturing of goods that are then exported from SA to third countries. The pavilion drew a high volume of visitors that wanted to see what Israel has to offer in the field.

This year for the first time the Embassy held an Israeli agriculture seminar titled “Growing More with Less”. Key-note speakers were the Israeli Ambassador to SA, Mr. Arthur Lenk, who highlighted the many areas of existing agricultural cooperation between the countries and the potential in further cooperation and Mr. Janowski, Barclays Africa Agricultural Division’s chief economist, who gave an in-depth status and forecast of the agricultural sector in Southern Africa.  The Israeli companies then each gave a short description of their activities. It was astounding to see that the Israeli companies present all had solutions for the challenges posed by Mr. Janowski. Mr. Isaac Isaac, the Israeli agronomic resident expert, described his projects which involve helping emerging farmers transform to lucrative farmers. Among the participants in the seminar were high level government officials, leaders of agricultural associations, farmers and journalists. The seminar was also the kick-off for the Agritech 2015 campaign.

This important agro technologies event takes place in Israel every 3rd year and draws huge crowds from around the world. In April 2015 we plan to have the largest ever South African delegation going to Israel for the show.
