Under the Population Registration Law, 5725 - 1965, an Israeli citizen must notify the Population Registry at the Ministry of the Interior of any change in his personal status. This is implemented between Israeli citizens abroad and the Ministry of Interior by means of special forms. These forms are dispatched to Israel through the Consular Departments of the Israeli missions throughout the world.
Please note: rabbinical certificates (ketubah) are not sufficient in the Israeli interior office, you can update your ketubah directly at the Rabbanut in Israel. Their phone number is 02-5311031 / 02-5311131

Notification of Marriage / Divorce

An Israeli citizen who was married/divorced abroad should notify the Population Registry of his new marital status by filling out a notification form on the change in status (
click here to download Form #3 - Notification of Change in Marital Status) and sending it to the Consular Department at the mission along with the verified (by Apostille) and translated (unless it is in English) original marriage/divorce certificate. A first page photocopy of the spouse’s Israeli and American passport must be attached along with 13$ return shipment fee. We accept money order payable to the "Consulate General of Israel" or credit card (Visa & MasterCard only). (

An Israeli citizen who wishes to change his first or last name must come in person to the mission with his Israeli passport, where he will fill out the notification form on the change of name (
click here to download the form Notification of Change of Name). The mission will send the form to the Ministry of the Interior in Israel. When the change of name is approved, the passport will be updated accordingly. When a resident of Israel who has changed his name returns to Israel, he must go to the Ministry of the Interior to have the change made in his identity card. The fee for changing a name is 31$. We accept credit card (Visa & MasterCard only).
