The showcase Corcoran.Musrara@Tumblr features the photographic conversations of Corcoran College of Art + Design students with students from the Naggar School of Photography, Media, New Music, Animation, and Phototherapy in Musrara, Jerusalem.

For the past nine months, ten Corcoran photography students held online photo conversations with ten Israeli photography students whom they had never met. Each pair was instructed to communicate with each other only through photography—without the use of words. Every few weeks, students from both institutions uploaded original images to Tumblr blogs in response to specific assignments. These images expressed their personalities, surroundings, likes, and dislikes.

At a time when many people forge relationships online, the project investigates how substantially one can rely on an individual’s personal images to construct a conversation and relationship. Can students from remote parts of the world, who do not speak the same verbal language, communicate effectively through images? How much do our personal artistic creations disclose about us? After nine months of communicating through visuals, do the partners know each other?

On view in White Halls, February 6-17.

Opening reception on February 9 from 6:30-8:30PM
