Action Committee for the Prevention of Air Pollution

Established in 1985. Together with the Association of Americans and Canadians in Israel, this group conducted a high-profile campaign in Haifa to bring about environmental changes. Through their activities, they succeeded in helping to reverse a proposal to build a second power plant in Haifa, in electing an environmental candidate to the Haifa City Council and in convincing both the Israel Electric Corporation and the oil refineries to burn low-sulfur fuel.

Established in 1968, the CBI is active in promoting environmental awareness, protecting the natural beauty of Israel, preserving historical sites, promoting the
rehabilitation of run-down urban areas and developing public recreation sites and gardens.
In 1992 the CBI Center for Environmental Studies was inaugurated. The center houses a
comprehensive library, classrooms, meeting rooms, auditorium and exhibition center and
runs a full and lively curricula of environment education programs.

Established in 1990, EcoNet is an environmental research information and advocacy organization. A citizens' group established in the wake of the Chernobyl catastrophe, it originally disseminated information on nuclear energy. Now it disseminates information on a broad set of issues including pesticides and magnetic radiation. The organization also acts as an information center, and through its hotlines, directs callers to the appropriate source of help.

Founded in 1982 to work on health related issues in the Arab
population. It has expanded the scope of its activities to environmental hygiene, including
sewage disposal, clean drinking water, reduction of industrial emissions and
environmentally-safe waste disposal and recycling. Its environmental work concentrates on
advocacy, research and education.

encourages industry, transportation, agriculture and other economic sectors to incorporate

operational concerns. The forum currently represents 120 businesses.

Established in 1990. The IUED is a public interest law group which provides free legal advice and representation to individuals and grass roots organizations. It
addresses local pollution problems through citizens suits and nuisance actions and serves
as a national resource for Israeli environmental law.
The IUED also acts as a "watchdog" over government ministries with regard to enforcement
of environmental law and the implementation and development of policy.
The organization has also established Israel's only Citizen's Laboratory, providing low cost
analysis of key environmental parameters in drinking water, air and soil.

Established in 1901. The JNF has been responsible for the planting of 200 million trees, creating 280 forests over an area of 80,000 hectares. It is also responsible for the caring of an additional 40,000 hectares of natural woodland. JNF activities have
succeeded in reversing desertification and continues to develop methods of harvesting
natural participation and has initiated large scale water conservation projects to cope with
water scarcity in Israel. JNF is involved in other water projects throughout Israel including
extensive drainage work in the Jezreel Valley to lower the saline water table and restore
agricultural productivity.

Established in 1975, the Life and the Environment Organization serves as an umbrella organization to coordinate environmental activities among Israel's non-governmental organizations. It currently represents 20 organizations which meet regularly
to exchange information on specific environmental activities and plan campaigns. It serves
as a lobby group; formulates policies on a national and local level and disseminates
information to citizens.

Established in 1953 by a group of citizens to protect the swampland of the
Hula Valley. It is now Israel's largest environmental organization with a membership of
over 100,000. It runs a broad-based program of education, conservation, research and public
action. It involves a million people a year in its walking tours, roving camps, field schools,
lectures and seminars. Together with Israel's universities and the Ministry of Science, the
SPNI operates 13 Information, Research and Development Centers. The Centers provide
essential data for developing conservation strategies.
In recent years, the SPNI has broadened its orientation to include environmental activism,
campaigning and lobbying, and is well known for its campaign to stop the building of the
Voice of America transmitter in the Arava desert.

EcoPeace

The establishment of EcoPeace in October 1994 heralded a new era of environmental activism. Following in the wake of the peace accords, EcoPeace constitutes a consortium of Egyptian, Israeli, Jordanian and Palestinian environmental groups working toward peace and sustainable development of the region. EcoPeace has focused on the protection of the environment of the Gulf of Aqaba and other border areas of mutual concern.
