Amos Oz

Monday, September 22

 7:30 pm

Washington DCJCC

MORE INFORMATION

Greek director Stelios Charalampopoulos paints a captivating portrait of acclaimed and iconoclastic Israeli author Amos Oz. In this film, which was shot in front of the breathtaking backdrops of the Israeli desert in Arad and the stunning city of Salonica, Greece, we are invited to learn about the rich family history that shaped one of the world's most prolific and influential writers.

Oz—whose writing captures the truth of human emotion—is a champion for peace, and notably open about his feelings on the struggles in the Middle East. The viewer is struck by the authenticity of his process and his love for his work. The film delves into Oz’s complicated past—including his mother's suicide and his years spent on a kibbutz—to examine how these difficult years shaped the work of this compassionate and often courageous author.

This film will be followed by a discussion with Professor Eric Zakim, executive director of the Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies at the University of Maryland.

Thursday, October 16, 2008, 7:30 PM

Christopher Newport University

Ferguson Center for the Arts

1 University Place

Newport News, Virginia 23606

MORE INFORMATION

Inbal Pinto and Avshalom Pollak’s newest dance-theater piece takes its inspiration from the snow-filled glass globes that fill with snowflakes when shaken.  The world inside the shaker is magical and enchanted, but not necessarily happy – it has both good and evil, joy and sadness.  Accompanied by a musical score that features classics by Chopin alongside Swedish folk music and fifties-era tunes performed by Japanese pop artists, Shaker weaves fantasy, drama and comedy together for a mesmerizing and enthralling experience

“Inbal Pinto and Avshalom Pollak’s latest work, Shaker, is so beautiful that it hurts... It is definitely one of their best works ever. It is a matue, and cohesive piece that comes through as pure and unscathed-with no extra frills and exaggerated visual effects. Yet, it maintains the rich characteristic rich imagination we have come to expect from its creators...that thrives on the theatrical and surreal. Watching Shaker had a cathartic effect.” –Jerusalem Post

"Clever and imaginative." -The New York Times
