Thomas Schnoell, the Consul General for Austria; Robert Rusiecki, Deputy Consul General of the Republic of Poland, and Fred Hoffman, the Honorary Consul General of Germany also traveled to Detroit. Chicago Attorney Michael Traison spearheaded the commemoration; Wayne State University organized the event with sponsorship and assistance from Detroit area organizations: Cohn Haddow Center for Judaic Studies, Hillel of Metro Detroit, and the Jewish Community Relations Council.
In her remarks, Consul Karmely said, "We must always repeat the message of "Never Again". The lessons that we learned must stay with us forever - that Jews can never underestimate the  risks and challenges we face. We must always have the ability to defend ourselves. We should educate the younger generation so that such a tragedy will never happen again."
