Eleven Chicago-area athletes who competed in last month’s Maccabiah Games in Israel visited the Consulate this week for a get-together with Consul General Roey Gilad. During the informal gathering, the athletes shared their experiences at the Games and recounted their individual participation in their respective sports.  CG Gilad gave a brief history of the Maccabiah Games and praised the athletes for their performances. The athletes were part of the largest Maccabiah in history, with over 9,000 athletes from 78 countries taking part in the competitions over the last two weeks in July. The athletes said  highlights of their trip included meeting with U.S. Ambassador Dan Shapiro, opening and closing ceremonies, and of course, the competitions, themselves.  The athletes competed in 42 different sports, from badminton to hockey to softball to karate, picking up gold, silver and bronze medals along the way.
