General URI BAR-LEV
Senior Israel Police & Public Security Attaché
to the United States and Canada
Major General Uri Bar-Lev was appointed to the position
of Senior Israel Police and Public Security
Attaché for North America, following his senior
posts as Commander of the Southern District Police,
Head of the Israel Police Intelligence Department,
as well as the Israel Police representative to Israels
National Security Council.
MG Bar-Lev joined the Israel Defense Forces in 1977
and later became an officer in the Combat
Engineering Corps. MG Bar-Lev lost a leg in the line
of duty but returned to active service following his
recovery. From 1985 to 1989 MG Bar-Lev was the commander
of the elite undercover counter-terrorism
unit, Duvdevan, in the I.D.F.
In 1990 MG Bar-Lev joined the Israel National Police
where he commanded the elite Israel Police special
undercover counter-terrorism unit, Gidonim, until
1994. He also served as the commander of the
Jerusalem Central Unit until 1996, and from 1996 to
1998 served as the Assistant to the Israeli Police
Commissioner. Between 1998 and 2004, MG Bar-Lev commanded
two sub-districts in the Tel Aviv
District and was the Deputy Commander of the Central
District Police. During his tenure as commander
of the Southern District, MG Bar-Lev was the chief
commander of the countrys Disengagement from
the
Gaza Operation of 2005.
Both elite units, the Duvdevan in the IDF, and the
Gidonim of the Israel Police focus specifically on
intelligence gathering as well as foiling terror activities.
As commander of both units MG Bar-Lev was
instrumental in the prevention of numerous terror
attacks, and preventing loss of lives.
MG Uri Bar-Lev is a very devoted and decorated officer.
He received the Distinguished Service Order and
Decoration for the Prevention of Terrorist Attacks
- Israel Police, 1995; the Operational Distinguished
Service Order - I.D.F., 1981; the Galilee Peace Campaign
Medal - I.D.F., 1994; and the War in Lebanon
Medal, 2006. MG Bar-Lev also received the Prime Ministers
Decoration for Outstanding Excellence for
commanding the Southern District in its fight against
crime, which resulted in economic growth in the
region.
An international expert in the field of combating
terrorism, global terror, and eradicating crime, MG
Bar-
Lev has had, for twenty years, experience in cooperating
with foreign agencies in these areas; he has
served as head of Israeli delegations to a number
of countries, including the United States, which
specifically focused on foiling and combating terrorism.
In his new position of the Israel Police and Public
Security Attaché, to the US and Canada, MG
Bar-Lev
will be working to strengthen international cooperation
with the United States and Canada.
MG Bar-Lev has a Bachelors degree from the University
of Haifa, Israel, and a degree in Agricultural
Engineering from Technion University in Haifa. He
completed staff command studies at the Military
Academy in Herzelia, Israel.
