Dr. Mordehai Cohen - Minister Counselor Agriculture Affairs
In January 2001, Dr. Mordehai Cohen assumed the post of Israel's Agricultural
Attache for the US, Canada and Mexico at the Embassy of Israel in
Washington, DC.
Dr. Cohen has worked in the Israeli agriculture and rural sectors since
1975. During his 25-year career he has specialized in rural agricultural
planning and development.
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Cohen served as the Director for Rural Planning
& Development Authority at the Ministry of Agriculture in Bet-Dagan, Israel.
In this position, Dr. Cohen was responsible for designing and executing
comprehensive policy relating to water and land issues as well as policies
dealing with production quotas. He was also responsible for collecting
and analyzing statistics on agriculture and rural sectors and breaking
down the national agricultural economy. He also conducted extensive research
on local and international markets as well as academic research projects
on agriculture and farms for the Ministry of Agriculture.
As part of his tenure at the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Cohen worked
on programs dealing with the development and expansion of non-agricultural
occupations, rural infrastructure, social-economic development, and organization.
He was appointed by the Agriculture Minister to sit on various national
committees among them The National Planning and Housing Council, Israeli
Land Council, National Water Council, etc.
Dr. Cohen took part in the peace negotiations with the Jordan and the
Palestinians in the agricultural fields. He was Chairman of the Israeli-Jordanian
Committee on Special Agricultural joint Projects. As Dr. Cohen specializes
in rural planning and development, he most recently led a team in planning
a model farm in China.
During his time at the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Cohen represented
his country in numerous international seminars and programs.
From 1989 through 1992, Dr. Cohen served as Vice-Chairman of the Settlements
Department and during the period of 1984 through 1989, Dr. Cohen served
as Director of the Northern Region of the Settlements Department at the
Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI). From 1981 through1984, Dr. Cohen led
the Israeli agricultural delegation to Peru which worked to advance and
develop the Majes Project.
Dr. Cohen earned his Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Studies from the Technion
Institute in Haifa in 1997. He graduated from the Hebrew University in
Jerusalem, Israel, with a BA in Economics and Statistics and an MA in
Business Administration. Prior to his university studies, Dr. Cohen was
an infantry officer in the Israeli Defense Forces.
Dr. Cohen was born in Kibbutz Hulda in central Israel. He is married to
Bilha and has three children. Dr. Cohen speaks Hebrew, Spanish and English.
