Aviva Raz-Shechter is currently serving as Minister-Counselor at the Embassy of Israel in Washington, DC. Ms. Raz-Shechter is in charge of Public and Academic Affairs and is also handling a political portfolio for African Affairs.

During the summer of 2003, Ms. Raz-Shechter was appointed to head the Office of Academic Affairs in the United States of America. As Minister-Counselor for Academic Affairs, she is responsible for maintaining close relations with the American academic community and for fostering cooperation with university students and faculty by making Israel-related information, programs and activities available for college campuses throughout the United States.

Prior to her assignment to Washington, she served as head of the Syrian-Lebanese Desk at the Political Research Center at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1999-2000). During this period she was appointed as a member of the Israeli Delegation for Peace Negotiations with Lebanon.

From 1997-1998, Ms. Raz-Shechter served as Political Counselor at the Embassy of Israel in Amman, Jordan.

From 1995-1996, Ms. Raz-Shechter was head of the East and South African Desk at the Israeli Foreign Ministry. In this capacity, she represented the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Organization of African Unity.

Her first Diplomatic assignment was at the Israeli Consulate in Montreal, Canada, where she served as Consul for Media, Public, and Cultural Affairs.

Ms. Raz-Shechter served as an Officer in the Israeli Defense Forces and has Bachelor and Master Degrees in Middle Eastern Studies from Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She was a recipient of the Golda Meir Fellowship.

Aviva Raz-Shechter is married to Edny Raz and has three children.
