The Israeli-Arab Orchestra
July 31, 2004
I would like to give a special thank you to the Georgetown
University Program in Performing Arts, the Washington DC Jewish
Community Center, and the Abraham Fund for co-sponsoring this unique
event. And to Orit Naor, Cultural Attachè at the Embassy
of Israel, who worked so hard to ensure the success of this evening.
And of course thank you to Nizar Radwan, the conductor, and all
the other members of the orchestra for the performance we are about
to enjoy.
It is unusual that I am asked NOT to speak about politics, and
tonight is one such special occasion. We all know too well the hurdles
and challenges we face in the Middle East. But tonight, we leave
that behind. We come to celebrate, we come to listen, we come to
unite.
The Israeli-Arab Orchestra of Nazareth is powerful and inspiring.
This orchestra sends a message of cooperation between Jews and Arabs,
a message that is all too often overlooked and ignored.
I can think of nothing better than culture to use as something
that can bridge divisions. We should not deny difficulties, but
in the same vein, we must recognize progress, achievements, and
advances and promote greater understanding between communities.
Tonight, we are one audience, Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Respecting
each other and celebrating our diversity. We are joined together
by beautiful music that will bond us, bridge our gaps, and unify
us It can happen. It can happen here and everywhere. This is the
important message of tonight. Thank you and enjoy.
