Gadi Shamni was born in Jerusalem in 1959 and enlisted
in the paratroopers' brigade of the IDF in 1977. The
Majority of his military career was served in the
paratroopers' brigade and special units.
In 1989 MG Shamni was appointed commander of the paratrooper's
890 battalion. Later on, he became the commander of
the paratroopers' reservist brigade and in 1999 became
the commander of the paratroopers' active duty brigade.
He also served as the battalion commander of the IDF
officers' school and as the commander of the Hebron
territorial brigade.
In 2001 MG Shamni was promoted to the rank of Brigadier
General and appointed Chief of infantry and paratroopers.
In 2003 he became the commander of the Gaza division
and in 2004 became the head of the operation division
of the I.D.F headquarters.
In 2005, he was promoted to the rank of Major General
and served as Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon's military
secretary and later on as Prime Minister Olmert's
military secretary. Two years later, in 2007 he was
appointed as the commander of the central command,
which includes Jerusalem and the area of Judea and
Samaria.

MG Shamni holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics
and political science from the University of Bar Ilan,
and a Master of Arts degree in national defense from
the University of Haifa. He is a graduate of the IDF
staff and Command College, a course in the US army
special forces (Green berets) in North Carolina and
the US army war college in Carlisle Barracks Pennsylvania.
He is married to Hadas and a father of three daughters
and a son.
