Sukkot - The Feast of Tabernacles
October 5, 2006

On Sukkot, Jews commemorate the Exodus from Egypt and give thanks for a bountiful harvest. Tens of thousands of Israelis erect sukkot - booths for temporary dwelling, resembling those in which the Israelites lived in the desert, after the Exodus. The holiday weeks ends with the celebration of Shemini Atseret/ Simhat Torah, when Jews renew the yearly cycle of Torah reading.
