Statistics Counter-Terrorism Activities

Between June 1st and June 27th 2003, 76 terrorists were arrested throughout the West Bank and Gaza. In addition, nine terrorists were killed in the course of operations by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) personnel.

  1. Those arrested included:
    • Ali Abidat from Bethlehem, a Tanzim operative, who took part in a shooting attack in which three Israeli civilians were killed and two others wounded (June 1)
    • Tarik Salah, a Tanzim operative and the head of a terrorist cell that carried out a number of drive-by shootings in the Ramallah district in which a number of Israeli civilians were murdered (June 11)
    • Issa Battat - the Head of Islamic Jihad in Bethlehem, responsible for many terrorist attacks in the Jerusalem area (June 15)
    • Ismail Hamadan, a Tanzim operative from Bethlehem involved in dozens of shooting attacks in which a number of Israeli civilians were murdered (June 15)
    • Ahmed Dahiri, the Head of Islamic Jihad in the Jenin area (June 15)
    • Yasser Hamdouni and Ali Hamarshe from Yaabed, who carried out a shooting attack in their village on June 12, in which an Israeli was killed.
      As a result of the above arrests, 14 terrorist attacks were foiled.
  2. Seven Hamas operatives were killed in the course of IDF counter-terrorism operations, six in Gaza and the seventh - Abdullah Qawasmeh - the Head of the Hamas infrastructure in Hebron, who was responsible for the execution of a number of suicide bombings.
  3. In two cases - in Netzarim (June 9) and Bat Hefer (June 14), attempts to infiltrate Jewish communities were interdicted. In total, 5 terrorist attacks were foiled by IDF deployment in the field.
  4. In seven cases, arms and explosives were found, including a pipe bomb weighing ten kilograms in the Um-Safah forest northwest of Ramallah (June 13), two explosive belts in Faroun (June 14), an explosive charge weighing 15 kilograms in a cave north of the village Inabous (June 16) and three pipe bombs were discovered in the course of making an arrest in Ramallah (June 16). Six terrorist attacks were thus foiled as a result of the discovery of the arms and explosives.
  5. During the aforementioned period, at least 25 terrorist attacks were foiled.
  6. The numerous incidents of the last weekend (28-30 June) are not included in these statistics. By comparison, 58 arrests were made during May and 27 terrorist attacks were foiled.
