(Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)
March 13, 2002
The Israel Security Ageny (ISA) and the Israel Police (Jerusalem
District) recently arrested six members of a Democratic Front for
the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) cell in the northern Jerusalem
village of Issawiya.
During the investigation, the cell members confessed that they
had perpetrated a large number of shooting attacks at private vehicles
and buses on the Jerusalem-Maaleh Adumim road and at security forces
stationed near the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Mt. Scopus campus.
The cell members also confessed to throwing Molotov cocktails and
pipe bombs at vehicles on the aforementioned road on numerous occasions,
as well as to setting fire to the vehicles and businesses of Issawiya
residents who either worked for Israeli employers or were suspected
of collaboration.
The cell members also confessed that they had planned to attack
the A-Zaim checkpoint on the Jerusalem-Maaleh Adumim road and the
Oferit IDF base near Issawiya, and to lay mines at the entrance
to Issawiya to be used against the security forces when they entered
the village, either either make arrests or to maintain order during
the demolition of illegally-built structures.
