Embassy Briefing
18 June 2002
Enough is Enough!
In the wake of this morning's heinous terrorist attack against
Bus #32 in Jerusalem, the following points should be stressed:
- Palestinian terrorists are pursuing an ongoing effort to strike
at Israel and Israelis. The Israeli counterterrorist campaign
is not sufficiently covered by the media, because a suicide terrorist
who is apprehended before he "succeeds" in killing is
not deemed
newsworthy enough to report. Nevertheless, it must be recalled
that in the last week alone, a number of suicide bombers were
arrested, and intelligence warnings indicated that five more suicide
bombers are still at large, anxious and poised to attack.
- Today's attack was timed to be carried out as close as possible
to President Bush's Middle East policy speech, which is expected
to once again present the Palestinians with a political horizon.
It must be made clear to the Palestinian leadership that under
the present conditions of ongoing terrorism, they will be unable
to meet their political aspirations.
- Israel is making every effort to prevent terrorism before it
occurs, and has achieved many successes in this regard. Israel
will continue in this course, as stated recently by Prime Minister
Sharon - "This terrorism must be confronted, and we shall
do just that."
- Many of the casualties of this morning's attack were school
children on their way to study. As repugnant and outrageous as
terrorism is, terrorism directed against children is especially
abhorrent and must be condemned outright.
Sincerely,
Moshe Fox
Minister of Public Affairs
Embassy of Israel, Washington D.C.
