Ambassador Ivry Responds to the Latest Attack on Israeli Civilians

June 1, 2001

the Ambassador's interview on NewsHour with Jim Lehrer (PBS)

"Tonight, a suicide bomber detonated himself in the midst of a large crowd of Israeli teenagers at an entrance to a popular Tel Aviv nightclub.

"Just over a week ago, Prime Minister Sharon called for a unilateral cease-fire in an attempt to bring an end to the terror plaguing the region for the past eight months. It is truly a pity that the Palestinians have not responded in kind, but chose to escalate the violence to even higher levels, and imposed a war of terror against Israeli civilians. The world must understand that our restraint has limits.

"Once again, innocent young people were brutally slaughtered in an ongoing campaign of Palestinian terror. The Palestinian Authority is directly responsible for these attacks. Having released hundreds of convicted terrorists, it is no wonder that suicide bombings and other lethal attacks are perpetrated on a daily basis. Chairman Arafat must stop this violence now".
