Music
Israeli music is diverse and unique, ranging from
classical, folk, jazz and ethnic, to pop, rock, hip
hop and rap.
Israel has several world renowned music schools,
including the Buchman-Mehta Academy of Music at Tel
Aviv University, the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music
and the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.
Israel's contributions to classical music continue
to grow. The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) is
internationally recognized as one of the best symphony
orchestras in the world and has played in famous venues,
such as New York's Carnegie Hall. Starting at the
IPO, Israeli violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman is considered
to be one of the most famous violinists of the late
20th century.

Israeli musicians have made a significant impact
on the New York jazz scene. Double bass player Avishai
Cohen, bassist Omer Avital and trombonist Avi Lebovich
play regularly in the United States and around the
world.
Hebrew lyrics have not stopped American audiences
from loving Israeli music. Stars like Idan Raichel
(who has performed at the Apollo Theater in New York
City) and Sheva, sing in Hebrew, Amharic and Arabic.
Israelis have become leaders in a genre that is less
dependent on language-electronic music. Israeli star
Ivri Lider began to work with a new and unique electronic
sound. He composed the music for the films Yossi and
Jagger and Walk on Water, both of which were critically
acclaimed in the United States. Lider has performed
several cross country tours of the United States.
Like many other nations, the influence of American
music in Israel is very strong. American singers and
bands are very popular, and Americanmusic is played
regularly on Israeli television andradio stations.
Often American performers willhave concerts in Israel,
including Madonna, U2 and Stevie Wonder.
